1. Shifter Action
What shifter action do you want - Single Action or Dual Action?
- Our Single Action Shifter features a traditional inline push button.
- While our Dual Action Shifter allows you to customize your gear shifting experience like never before. Whether you prefer the traditional inline push button or the side detent, we've got you covered with both options in one mechanism.

3. Shifter Arm Style
What length and shape of shift stick do you require?
American Shifter Co. has got the whole range of shift levers from 23” double bend arms to 6” straight arms. Get the leg room, leverage and shifter feel you want. All sticks are made of hardened steel and include upper and lower tapered nuts. Works on push button and side shift shifters. Available in chrome plated or black powder coat finish.

What style shift knob do you prefer?
American Shifter offers 2 default shift knob options: standard black or deluxe billet. Both are from our line of nostalgic mushroom shaped knobs. Or upgrade to any American Shifter knob – tons to choose from!

1. Choose Your Shifter Action
Single Action
Push Button Only
Our single action shifter features a traditional inline push button.
The single action shifter requires using the push button on top of the knob. The shifter will lock in the following positions: Park, Reverse to Neutral and Neutral. You are required to push the button to shift from Park to Reverse.
Dual Action
Push Button & Side Action
Our dual action shifter features push button shift & side action shift – both options with one mechanism!
The dual action shifter not only works the same as the single action shifter, but the dual action shifter also allows you to change gears by pushing the stick to the side. When doing this you do not need to push the button on the knob.
2. Choose Your Application
What transmission are you using?
Determine what transmission you have to select the appropriate American Shifter assembly and its location.
- Available for most Chrysler, Ford & GM automatic transmissions.
- If you are unsure, use the image below to determine the transmission by the shape of the transmission oil pan and the number of bolts holding it on.
- Based on your application selection, your kit will include all appropriate brackets for your transmission. The American Shifter top plate supports multiple mounting positions, allowing front, mid, and rear mounting of the shifter mechanism. So you can choose the ideal mounting position for your installation. Additionally, the adjustable shifter assembly brackets allow the shifter assembly to be tilted forward and backwards to give additional clearance at the seat or dash if needed.

Will this shifter kit fit my transmission?
Our shifter kits are available for most Chrysler, Ford & GM automatic transmissions.

The American Shifter top plate supports multiple mounting positions, allowing front, mid, and rear mounting of the shifter mechanism. Does the shifter kit come with a shift knob?
Yes, all our shifter kits come with a shift knob. Choose your option from the dropdown. Available in standard black or billet deluxe.
If you'd like something different, upgrade to any American Shifter knob or customize your own (may require an adapter).
Is the neutral safety switch included?
Yes! The neutral safety switch is included with the shifter mechanism.
Replacement neutral safety switches can be purchased separately as well.
Does the shifter kit include bolts, washers & lock nuts?
Yes, all hardware needed to install is included.
Does this kit include the side shift adapter?
American Shifter Dual Action Kits include the side detent shifter adapter & detailed instructions on how to install it.

Can I mount the shifter kit multiple ways?
Yes! The American Shifter top plate supports multiple mounting positions, allowing front-, mid-, and rear-mounting of the shifter mechanism. Choose the ideal mounting position for your installation.
Additionally, the adjustable shifter assembly brackets allow the shifter assembly to be tilted forward and backwards to give additional clearance at the seat or dash if needed.
What is the minimum space required between the floor and the mounting bracket for a transmission mount application?
We recommend a minimum of 1/4” between the brackets and the floor pan in any application with any shifter kit to allow for twist of the transmission under a load. Most applications will have more than this.
How do I know what arm length to choose?
The correct length of shift arm for your application can be measured out ahead of time.
With the transmission installed, measure down through the hole in the floor to the top of the transmission, holding the tape measure where the shifter knob would be comfortable. Subtract 5.5” from the measurement and that would be the length of shifter arm needed.
Do you have boot kits that fit these shifter kits?
Yes! American Shifter’s boot kits include all you need to dress up your shifter. Boots are made of real Naugahyde material.

Do you sell emergency brakes that work with these?
Yes! American Shifter’s vertical transmission mount emergency brakes will work on any American Shifter kit. They are setup to bolt up to the transmission.
These handbrakes offer superior performance with a classic design. Features a chrome steel handle, heat treated ratcheting cut gear & lock and a machined push button with optional o-rings. Available in 2 sizes.
Do I need to order a trans gear selector shaft kit for Ford AOD transmission?
Our instructions cover adapting your Ford AOD shifter arm with no extra parts.
However, you can upgrade your shifter kit and make fine tuning easy with American Shifter’s patent pending Ford AOD adapter. This additional selector shaft allows you to fine tune your shift linkage for smoother shifting.
Does the Powerglide shifter require floor/hump alteration to install like cutting?
The shifter mounts to the transmission and would need a minimum 2” hole for the shift arm to come through. This hole is covered by the trim ring and boot.
Some smaller vehicles with very little space between the transmission and the hump may require light modification to allow for clearance.
Will this kit work on a 4 Wheel Drive application?
Our shifter kits are designed to work on 2WD applications. However, our shifter kits can be used on 4WD applications with a simple modification to the rear mounting brackets.

Will this kit work on Jeep applications?
Some Jeep's have a Chrysler style transmission. Some have a Jeep built transmission.
Our shifter kits will work with the Chrysler style transmissions. However, they will not work with the Jeep style transmissions.
